Is PRP Right for Me?
If you’re struggling with chronic pain, you’re likely willing to try anything to get relief. Sometimes surgical options aren’t advised and oral medications can feel like a slippery slope.
That’s why more and more people are seeking out holistic, regenerative medicine options like platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
At The Spine and Sports Center at The Galleria in Houston, Sugar Land, and the Willowbrook/Cy-Fair area of Texas, Dr. Benoy Benny provides regenerative medicine treatments like PRP to help patients struggling with the aftermath of an injury or with chronic back, neck, or hip pain.
PRP basics
Your blood contains three main components, suspended in plasma:
- White blood cells
- Red blood cells
- Platelets
Platelets are responsible for blood clotting and boost your body’s healing power when you have an injury or wound. PRP therapy isolates your platelets in a solution of concentrated plasma, the liquid part of your blood.
When we inject PRP into an area of injury and pain on your body, the platelets go to work. They release growth factors, which work with your body’s stem cells to produce new tissue. PRP also attracts stem cells, which converge on the area to help in the task of regeneration.
With PRP therapy, it’s possible to accelerate healing of your muscles, ligaments, bones, and cartilage, and to reduce inflammation and pain. Best of all, it’s 100% biocompatible since it’s made out of nothing but concentrations of your own blood.
Creating PRP
The first step in PRP therapy is a process that turns your blood into a powerful platelet-rich concentrate. You’ll have a blood draw and the blood will be spun in a centrifuge to extract the platelets by concentrating them in one end of the vial.
These platelets are extracted and mixed with cleaned plasma from your blood. This part of the process can take up to 30 minutes, so our staff will make sure you’re comfortable while your PRP is prepared.
Once it’s ready, the solution is injected into the site of your pain. These injections can be repeated if necessary until your pain is relieved.
Is PRP right for me?
You may be a candidate for PRP if you had a surgical procedure such as rotator cuff repair or you have arthritis pain despite conservative treatments like physical therapy.
We review your symptoms and health to determine if PRP is the best choice for you.
